Scandinavian interior

Our obsession with a certain European aesthetic shows no sides of slowing down, with over 5million Instagram posts currently dedicated to #ScandinavianDesign. But what exactly are the principles of Scandinavian design? And how easy is it to achieve the look in your property? Here’s everything you need to know.

It all starts in Northern Europe…

Scandinavia refers to the countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark (including Greenland) as well as Finland and Iceland. These countries are all based in northern Europe. Each has its own rich culture and subtle differences but all share a broader design aesthetic that’s widely celebrated across the world.

Its a design movement that celebrates contrast

Leading interior design magazine House Beautiful says: “Scandinavian design is the epitome of simplicity with an emphasis on function and beauty. It’s minimal and clean yet cosy and influenced by nature… it’s the ideal design style for someone who wants to feel like their home is constantly giving them a warm embrace and making their life easier.”

You’d probably recognise it if you saw it

Scandinavian design is characterised by neutral tones, natural materials and a minimalist approach to clutter. Over the past few decades, it’s risen to prominence thanks to iconic designers such as Aalvar Aaalto and Arne Jaconbson (and of course, industry giant IKEA). More recently, Instagram experts such as Hygge for Home and KJG Home have carved out a niche sharing Scandinavian design tips with hundreds of thousands of followers. All eager to recreate the effortless look.

Calming colours are essential

Neutral shades form a huge part of the Scandinavian aesthetic (think: black, grey, tan and brown) as do calming colours inspired by the great outdoors (petal pink, sage green and grey-blue). Key to the look are white walls that offset the neutrals by adding a bright and airy feel, reflecting light into even the darkest corners.

Textiles are key to the cosy vibe

True to its northern European roots, Scandinavian design often features textiles such as sheepskin rugs, thick blankets and piles of soft cushions. Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and wool provide the foundation alongside oak doors which add warmth and extra interest. Contrast is created through streamlined furniture chosen for practicality and usefulness while the lush greenery of houseplants brings the outdoors in.

Where does ‘Hygge’ come into it?

What is Hygge? When it comes to textiles and home decor, Scandinavian style has become synonymous with the Danish concept of ‘Hygge’. A term which exploded in popularity back in 2016

Hygge is defined as: “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” That could be anything from squashy beanbags and twinkling fairy lights to welcoming guests with the scent of freshly baked pastries.

It’s about more than just the look – it’s a lifestyle

Scandinavian design takes elements of different movements to create something unique:

  • Modernism – practical designs where function is more important than form
  • Minimalism – creating a simple look using only the bare essentials
  • The slow living movement – making time for calm moments within the hectic modern world
  • Biophilic design – a design technique that helps us feel closer to nature

At its core, Scandinavian design revolves around core ideas of inclusivity and accessibility. It’s about creating a ‘look’ that’s easy to recreate and enjoy. It’s about giving everyone access to good design in a way that promotes a happier lifestyle and creates a daily routine that feels easier.

With a little ‘lagom’ thrown in too…

Scandinavian design represents slowing down, enjoying our surroundings and finding balance. This is where the Swedish concept of ‘lagom’ comes into play here. But what is lagom?

Essentially, the definition of lagom is: “just the right amount” or “not too much, not too little” but can also be translated as “in moderation”, “in balance”, “perfect-simple” and “just enough”.

In practice, this could mean investing in stylish storage solutions to cut down on clutter or making sure there’s enough open space around large furniture items.

At the heart of everything? A connection to nature

Scandinavian design is rooted in an appreciation of the natural world. But why is this important? Studies show all humans possess an instinctive connection to nature which can help boost our overall wellness through benefits such as improved mood and reduced stress.

Through elements such as soothing outdoor-inspired colour palettes (or glazed doors that maximise your daily dose of natural daylight), Scandinavian design promotes a feeling of health and wellbeing.

Just what you need to create a lifestyle you truly love.
