neo industrial apartment with a velvet sofa and exposed brick walls

You may have heard of ‘industrial design’ but what is neo-industrial design? Inspired by retro factories, this emerging design movement brings a fresh feel to the popular industrial look of the noughties.

It combines stripped-back architectural features and minimalist philosophy with warm wood tones and organic textures. Neo-industrial design also draws inspiration from the Scandinavian aesthetic. So expect a focus on neutral colours, references to nature and lots of natural light. Great for modern living.

Where does the industrial design look come from?

Starting in the 1970s and continuing into the 2000s, industrial interior design became popular due to the shortage of homes available in large cities such as New York.

Developers would snap up large empty buildings (usually old factories) and would rapidly turn them into apartments. This often resulted in leaving brickwork and piping exposed in a rush to get paying tenants in.

Because this type of dwelling became so common, the look went mainstream and ended up becoming an accidental trend. The upshot? Where elements such as exposed wooden beams and concrete floors were once covered up or renovated over, they’re now considered desirable features. Essential to achieving an industrial style interior design look.

What does industrial interior design look like?

The main features of industrial design are brick walls, glazed internal doors and rustic flooring. This is combined with concrete surfaces, metal accents and modern furniture in materials such as leather.

Often there are nods to industrial heritage such as Edison light bulbs and copper piping. Colours are neutral and inspired by raw materials (examples include black, white, grey, brown and even rust). The overall effect should promote ‘open plan living’ with a spacious, airy feel.

How is neo industrial design different?

It’s a calmer, comfier, cosier refresh of the original look that seamlessly blends industrial edge with soft fabrics and warm textiles. Think: a sheepskin throw on a metal stool or a jute rug over a concrete floor. Other additions include rattan mats, linen cushions, sleek sliding doors and plenty of houseplants. Ideal for creating a soothing atmosphere.

Why is the neo industrial look so popular?

Neo-industrial design makes a stunning statement on its own. But crucially, it’s one of those rare aesthetics that can be mixed with other styles.

In fact, it’s particularly effective when used as a minimalistic base layer, acting as a blank canvas for bolder, brighter decor and trend-led items. It’s this versatility that makes it such an enduring and accessible style.

Often, neo-industrial design is combined with the latest trends. Most recently, warm minimalism and #ScandiStyle.

It also works when blended with softer, more traditional styles such as farmhouse and mid century modern. This creates a delicious contrast that really draws the eye. And because the combinations are virtually limitless, it’s the perfect way forward if you want to create a home that doesn’t look like anyone else’s.

Our top tip? Check your chosen styles don’t compete with each other and instead, work together for a harmonious and cohesive final look.

What properties is it best suited to?

It’s common to assume the industrial look only works for loft apartments that have that rustic, edgy foundation already in place. But neo-industrial design is more about introducing elements that have a refined vibe and luxe feel, working with what you already have. This makes it easier to apply the look to any type of property, whether that’s a new build or country manor.
